Birla Cellulose Breathes Life into Ajrakh Block Print Tradition with Liva Modal
May 17, 2024
Ajrakh, a craft steeped in history dating back to the 16th century, traces its origins to Sindh and found its vibrant home in Bhuj, Gujarat. There, artisans passionately engage in a meticulous 20-day process to create the exquisite Ajrakh Modal Silk Saree, a testament to their enduring dedication and skill. This timeless artistry unfolds upon a canvas woven from a fusion of Bemberg and Birla Modal fabrics, affectionately known as "Gajji Silk" or "Modal Silk" in trade markets. Renowned for its exceptional qualities, including unparalleled comfort, biodegradability, quick-drying properties, remarkable drape, zero pilling, and minimal shrinkage, Birla Modal sets the stage for the enduring beauty of Ajrakh.
In the heart of this bustling locale, artisans meticulously select wooden blocks adorned with intricate traditional designs. Each block, coated with a blend of lime and Acacia gum, is then firmly pressed onto the fabric, creating a rhythmic echo akin to a heartbeat. This initial imprint serves as a vital resist, guiding the journey of colors to come.
Myrobalan, a natural dye agent that infuses the fabric with a warm yellow hue while ensuring the steadfast fixation of subsequent dyes. The cloth, having undergone the transformative process of calendering, is then laid flat to bask in the sun's radiant warmth, a final step before the journey of color unfolds. Lime and gum once again unite to delineate the outline of intricate designs, known as "rekh," a crucial stage particularly for double-sided fabrics.
With practiced hands and discerning eyes, artisans carefully align blocks, applying vibrant dyes to bring the designs to life. Black motifs emerge with the application of a mixture comprising jaggery and gram flour, while the rich red hues are coaxed forth through the delicate balance of alum and tamarind. After each color application, the cloth undergoes meticulous rinsing and gentle sun-drying, a ritualistic process that breathes life into every fiber.
As the final strokes of the printing process unfold, the cloth undergoes a series of washes, dyed in an array of natural colors, and once again laid out to soak in the sun's warmth, achieving a flawless finish.
